We know that it's crazy during the holidays, but don't forget we have a meeting tonight at the usual time, 6pm!
Other important upcoming dates include the Cookie Rally at 10am on January 11th. This will be at United methodist Church in Chapel Hill (150 E Franklin St, Chapel Hill).
Also, don't forget on February 8th, at 11 am, our troop will tour the Burwell School at 319 N Churton St, in Hillsborough. The cost is $5 per girl, and this includes her patch. The preference is for checks made out to the Historic Hillsborough Commission (HHC) and will need to be paid on the day of the event. After the tour and program, we will have lunch on the lawn. Please provide a bag lunch for your girl scout!
See you tonight! Please make sure to let Brie know if you can't make it.
Happy new year!
This site will be used to update families of GS troop 1517. Important information regarding meetings, activities and even pictures from events will be updated here throughout the year.

Hike Cancelled
Unfortunately with the lousy weather, and the probable lack of rain gear available for each girl, the hike scheduled for today, Dec 14th, will be cancelled.
At our next meeting on Monday, we can discuss a time to reschedule, most likely after the holidays.
See you Monday! Don't forget your family star!

Troop Hike! Saturday, December 14, 2pm to 4pm
On Saturday, December 14, the troop will be taking a hike at the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural area in Hillsborough. The hike is planned from 2pm until 4pm Saturday afternoon.
Please RSVP to Brie as soon as possible!! This should be done via e-mail and as soon as you are sure your scout will attend.
The hike will be Scouts only! As of today, all of the adult/chaperone spots are full, so unless you've already been told by Brie that you were a chaperone, plan on dropping off your scout by 1:50pm in the parking lot at the park. While the hike will start at 2pm, if you are not there early, it will delay the entire group. Please be respectful of your fellow Scouts and our Ranger and chaperones by being on time!!
This will be a geology hike, accompanied by a ranger, and the girls should plan on dressing warmly and comfortably enough to hike a mile and a half. They should also be prepared for the day's weather. As of Monday, December 9, the forecast for Saturday is cloudy and warmer than this week, with highs in the mid 50s. The girls should dress in layers which will allow for adjustment if the weather turns cool, windy, rainy or even warm. They should also wear fairly sturdy, comfortable shoes. No special equipment is required, a good pair of sneakers or tennis shoes should be adequate. Even though it is winter, they will be outdoors for 2 hours, so consider a light sunblock and lip protection.
Remind your Scout to get a good night's rest on Friday night, and to eat a good, balanced breakfast and lunch before taking off. She should also drink plenty of water in the morning to start out well hydrated. Avoid caffeine or overly sugary snacks and foods for lunch before the hike, as she will need a good balanced meal with protein and complex carbohydrates to help fuel her on the trail.
There is a link to a map of the park here

The directions, found on the Occoneechee Mountain website, are as follows:
To reach Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area from I-85, take exit 164. Turn right traveling north on Churton Street, and turn left at the next traffic light onto Mayo Street. At the next stop sign, turn left onto Orange Grove Road. Turn at the second right on to Virginia Cates Road, and follow the signs to the parking area.
Here is a link to the park website. http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/ocmo/main.php which includes trail maps and parking lot maps.
Feel free to use the comments section below to communicate possible hook ups for car pooling to and from the park. Again, keep in mind that all of the adult spots available for this outing are full, and no siblings will be allowed for the organized geology hike. You are welcome to stay and enjoy the park, or you can return to pick up your scout at 4pm.

Family Star Instructions
At the 12/2 meeting, the girls were given a family star. The instructions for preparing your family star are below:
My Family Star (PDF file)
Read the Girl Scout Law with your family:
I will do my best to be honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong,
and responsible for what I say and do,
and to respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place,
and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
What line from the Law is most important to you and your family?
Why?
Write your family's favorite line and the reason why in the center of your star.
Who is in your family? Write their names on the points of your star. (Mother, father, grandparents, sisters, brothers, etc)
What special quality or skill do your family members have? Write those under their names.
After you fill in your star, decorate it if you want to! Add colors, stickers, glitter, or whatever else you have handy. Bring it to your next Brownie session!
